It feels like socio constructivist and sociocultural are interchangable but I believe there are important differences?

Social constructivism (Vygotsky, 1978) is indeed related to sociocultural theory, but there are important differences. Both theories understand knowledge as something that is socially and culturally constructed by humans. However, sociocultural theory places special emphasis on the mediating role of historically situated cultural tools and artefacts (Cole and Wertsch, 1996).
